I had the opportunity to talk to Jimmy Fällström at the Affiliate Summit in New York. He is the International Account Manager of Internet Vikings, a swedish company that serves internet professionals with Domain Software, SEO Hosting, Diversified IPs and Internet Data.
Hi Jimmy, thanks a lot for the interview. Let's get started: What do you do and how did you get into SEO?
I first got in touch with SEO somewhere around 2007 when I was interviewed for a position at a small Swedish SEO agency. My job is to build and strengthen existing customer relationships and attract new ones.
Internet Vikings does not do SEO ourselves, we provide SEO agencies with the infrastructure to provide very secure and qualified link building. The services we provide are highly trusted drop cached domains that have a certain page rank, age and have a healthy network of trusted incoming links.
We also own over 200k IP's ranging over 1000 C-classes that can be used for setting up highly qualified SEO sites or to set up proxies or data mining. On top of that, we also have the ability to host a lot of our customers SEO networks and deliver some full sites with very high quality content based on the sites content pre-drop, which can be used to start setting up links right away.
What are the biggest challenges for your business over the next couple years?
Our biggest challenge at the moment is to reach outside of our native markets in Scandinavia. The technologies and strategies we use are starting to get well known in Scandinavia, but it haven't really gained much traction in other parts of the world. It can still be looked down upon as an uncertain way of going about building a strong link network.
And where do you see the biggest opportunities?
When it comes to off-site SEO, I think that the type of link building we offer the infrastructure for is gonna come out on top, due to the scalability, efficiency and cost-efficiency we can offer. The opportunity is to „wow!“ the customers by providing great results. If you do it the right way and care about your content and your network structure (and if you don't overuse it), you can really exceed the customers expectations, and still scale. If you are an SEO agency with a well built site network, the revenue possibilities are huge.
Is there anything you would do differently?
If you are just starting out, I would advice you to be open minded about the techniques our customers use. A lot of people may tell you that there is a risk involved of loosing your backlinks. But if you are very selective and diversified in your content strategy, and spread your sites over a lot of IP's and don't over use the links, you have a scalable platform that can provide links for many customers and give you great revenue. My answers may seem directed to SEO agencies, but if you do SEO on your own with this technique, you can be very successful and save a lot of money in the long run.
What are the most valuable hints you would give someone who is just starting out?
Be strategic with you content, buy high quality domains and get a vendor that have a wide range of IP:s to host the sites.
Thanks Jimmy!

Gregory Kim, Chief Revenue Officer at Slickdeals, talks about how the website grew into the Top150 US-websites. For him, „Social is the winning business model!“
Slickdeals uses Social Commerce and Crowdsourcing, which allows the best deals to surface, influenced by community votes and comments. This leads to more sales for the merchant, and lower customer acquisition costs.
The site started in 1999 and grew slowly. Once the community grew enough and reached its inflection point, it started growing by itself. Until 2012, the company grew organically and virally without, and then they added paid advertising to the mix – now Slickdeals has more than 9 million unique visitors each month.
This is how Slickdeals.com works:
- Great deals get posted by members
- The community votes on it
- Deal editors curate the content
- Consumers get huge savings, merchants generate incrementals sales and new customers
The secret sauce
- Content and value is king – design is secondary, the social aspect is the competitive advantage.
- Quality and trust is the #1 job – merchants are not allowed to post deals, the community combined with the expert team are responsible for the content.
- Community feedback loops – not-great content will get voted down.
- Social is not easy, but the ROI is powerful! It is difficult to build social at scale.
The recommendation is obvious: Incorporate Social and Mobile in your business!

Eric Crusius from Fed Nexus Law talks about the most common (and easy to fix) mistakes affiliates make.
- Treat your business like a business and incorporate (e.g. via Legalzoom.com) – this protects your personal assets. Keep the assets seperate, e.g. have separate bank account etc.
- Have contracts with your stakeholders in place! (e.g. how intellectual property and promotional material/logos can be used)
- Always use the company's name when you sign a contract.
- Everything is automatically copywrighted! Also, learn the basics of trademark use and copywright laws.
- Being honest in your marketing! Don't make false claim, always back it up. No deceptive formats (fake news stories), no false endorsements, no substantiated claims, …
- If you offer „free trials“, make sure that the customers can get in touch with you and return the product.
- Don't SPAM! Use accurate subject lines, have an opt-out, and only use permission based email optins.
- If you use adword campaigns, be sure not to use some else's trademark in your ad.
- Don't user other peoples photos!
- Understand your risks as an affiliate – read the contracts etc. you have with your networks.
- Protect yourself from the „enemy within“ – e.g. business partners that are trying to take over, freelancers that go rogue and steal data, employees that engage in cyber attacks or hacking,…
- Protect yourself from external enemies, e.g. bad reviews on Yelp.com etc. Monitor these sites and take action if necessary.
- Pay attention to the Google autocomplete – e.g. if you type in „XYZ“, Google can show suggestions like „XZY Scam“.
- Register your name on social media, top level domains, copyrights, monitor your brand (e.g. with Google Alerts)
- Don't be afraid to ask a professional for help!
Now, just get on it and do it!
